SEGUIN WOMAN DELIVERS HEALTHY BABY BOY IN CTMC WOMEN’S CENTER PARKING LOT
SAN MARCOS, TX – Before today, Trina Chandler thought vehicular childbirth only happened in the movies.
After going into labor at 5:15 a.m., she and her husband, Irvin, dropped their two children off at school and headed to the hospital.
“My water broke at the stop light,” Trina Chandler said.
Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) Marketing Coordinator Kale Romberger was unloading supplies from her car at the CTMC Women’s Center to prepare for a commercial filming when the Chandlers arrived.
“Dad drove up and announced that his wife was delivering, but I didn’t yet realize how urgent the situation was,” she said. “The nurse team and Dr. (Jenifer) Kowalik arrived immediately, and within three minutes, the baby was in mom’s arms in the passenger seat. It was a beautiful experience.”
Trina Chandler, who is a school teacher in Seguin, said the situation “seemed like a dream,” but that she was extremely pleased with the care she received at CTMC, even if it was in the parking lot.
“(The staff) were really sweet,” she said. “They came to my rescue.”
Tyson Jonah Chandler was born healthy on Aug. 29 at 7:55 a.m., one day before his due date. Since Irvin Chandler is a defensive coordinator at Seguin High School, he was grateful that his son arrived a day before his team’s first football game of the season.
Completed in 2009, CTMC’s 64,000-square-foot Women's Center includes an on-site, high-risk delivery suite and a customized cesarean section suite, a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and a new cardiac inpatient nursing unit.
The Women’s Center features special amenities for mothers and families, including flat screen televisions, free Wi-Fi, nutrition stations, a gift shop, an online photo album of newborns for friends and family to view and a Healing Garden for visitors.

The hospital, which originated in 1923 as Hays County Soldiers, Sailors and Marines Memorial Hospital, was restructured in 1960. The present facility was opened at its current Wonder World Drive location in 1983.
